"Im Losing My French...
Help!"
If
you are not practicing, if you don't speak French at all during several
month, it is inevitable. You will find that you forgot almost
every words and that you can make a correct sentence. This can happen
even if you was the best student.
I
learned Spanish at school, and I was excellent. I really like to speak
Spanish, and don't get me wrong, when you are French, nothing can be
easier than learning to speak Spanish.
However,
after more than ten years without really speaking Spanish (I didn't
make a complete sentence during all this time!), I lost the language. I
didn't realize that until I met a teacher who was fluent in Spanish. I
could understand what he was saying, but I wasn't able to reply!
I
realized that I became really weak when I was teacher in Dubai. I had a
student who could only speak Spanish (it was an English school), and I
became his translator for a while.
Happily,
with practice, I was able to come back and speak Spanish for the second
time.
Know
that if you didn't learn French when you was a kid, you must always
practice and speak to others, otherwise you can lose your French very
quickly.
If
you don't find someone to speak French with (it can happen when you
live in the US for example), you may need to buy a learn French
software and practice every week or once a month.
Another
option is to travel to Paris or any other French speaking country from
time to time. Like that, you are sure that you will not lose your
French. You will improve and become better.
Try
to have a contact in France, at least you can communicate with him/her
via postal mail, email or with the telephone.
The
remedy to your problem is simple: revision and practice! Listen to a
tape, talk to someone...
