The
French language is the second most spoken language in the world, just
after English. You can find French speaking countries in the five
continents.
Everywhere kids, students and parents want to speak French! That's why
it is the second most commonly taught language in the world.
How
did the French language spread over the world? One of the important
factor of the expansion French language is French colonies. You
will find a lot of African countries that speak French in the list
below. Another factor is that people see the French language as the
language of romance, the language of love (I am still wondering
why).
Also,
since the language comes just after English, it gives to people who can
speak French a kind of 'prestige', or if you prefer: 'la classe'.
What country speak French?

French
Speaking countries with French as an official language:
French
is the official language in France and its territories. Those
territories are called Dom, Tom and Collectivite
territoriales.
Dom
stands for Departement D'outre Mer (oversea department), Tom stands for
Territoire D'outre Mer (oversea Territory).
It
is also the official language of these African country: le Benin, le
Senegal, le Burkina Fasso, la Republique Democratique du Congo, Le
Togo. etc... It can be difficult to believe, but in most of these
African countrie, people tend to speak a better French than in France!
They don't use slang or modern French as we use it in France.
French
is also the official language in the Quebec, and some swiss
(switzerland) districts, like in Geneve and Neuchatel.

Speaking countries with French as a co-official language:
In Africa: Le Burundi, le
Cameroun, le Chad, la guinee equatoriale, le
Rwanda, Djibouti.
Other places: Canada and
Haiti.
Countries
where French plays an important role in commerce or administration:
In
many countries, you will find a lot of people who speak French on a
daily basis, and French can be taught as the main language. This is
often due to a past presence of the French population, or to
colonization.
All
the countries of the 'maghreb': Algeria, Tunisia, Marocco, Egypt,
Mauritania. French is present in syria as well. The French language
also plays an important role in Brazil, and in Lousiana in the United
States.

organizations where French plays an important role:
African
Union, World Trade Agency, International Olympic Commitee.
That's a lot of people who speak French. You don't have excuse with all
these places, and even if you can's travel to France (for x,y reason),
you may be able to land in one of these numerous French speaking
countries.
