"French Accent - My French
Accent Is Weak Can I
Improve It?"
Yes,
you can improve your French accent. Getting the real French accent is
not a necesity when you think about it. People who should really get
worried about their accent are those who learn French as a second
language for their job, or business.
When
we talk about French accent, we mean that you can speak like a
native speaker. For example if you were to call someone over the
telephone, he couldn't guess that you are not French.
Is
this you? If yes, congratulations, you attained an excellent level, and
you may get your A+ soon!
Don't
be confused with typing
French accents which consists in the different kind of
accent above some French letters. Do not mix accent with pronunciation,
It is an entire subject on its own.
Can
an english (or American) native really get the right French accent?
Trying
to get the right French accent may be your biggest challenge when
trying to learn French as a second language. I know because I speak
English fluently for more than twelve years now, and I still have a
French accent!
It
may be only me, because I have some friends who didn't keep their
French accent at all.
Furthermore,
when I was in New York, I use to speak English, and often people were
asking me if I was Cuban. When I asked the reason, they told me that it
was my English accent.
Trying
to get the real French accent is not an easy task, and to really get
it, you need to listen, listen... And listen again. The next thing you
need to do is to repeat. There is no secret here.
After
learning several languages (including Arabic and Spanish), I found that
my tongue was inclined to adapt easily to these languages.
The
American accent is really strong, and the accentuation on the words is
totally different than French. Obviously, it is more difficult for an
American to get it right than a british.
Which
accent do you want to grasp?
People
in Paris don't have the same accent than French in Marseille or
Toulouse. It is a different story.
I
guess that for starters, it's better to take the 'Paris-go' accent, the
accent of peaple in the capital.
We
say that 'les parisiens' (people living in Paris and ile de France)
don't have accent. They speak French the right way. Those same people
see that all other cities in France has its own accent, except Paris.
Ironically,
people living in 'Marseille' see themselves without accent!
